Münster

In the summer semester 2018, international students of the bachelor courses „International Marketing“ and „Strategic Marketing“ successfully attended the TOPSIM-Startup challenge supervised by Dr. Christian Junker.

As the latest research project results from “Managing Disruptive Innovation” suggest a positive correlation between the conditions in Startups (more precisely “Entrants”) and really new, disruptive Innovation, one of the implications on teaching is an enhanced emphasis on entrepreneurial skills.

Therefore TOPSIM-Startup simulates the virtual foundation of a company producing surfboards in Santa Beach closed to reality. Students have to fulfill the following key tasks being: definition of team roles, design name, logo and business model, convince investors and then finally make business decisions regarding the whole value chain including support processes. The simulation allows to apply and to integrate the learned skills from other lectures.

Students furthermore decide, work and compete in an international team, they select and evaluate interesting information, show agile flexibility to external events/developments and then present and discuss their decisions in the plenum. After the course students highlighted the experience as very valuable for themselves, especially the great team experience and the practical approach.
